Gabriel Avalos 鈥17 is helping teens find their future.

Avalos is the coordinator of post-secondary options, career resources and scholarship at Chicago鈥檚 Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, a therapeutic residential program for children who have experienced abuse, neglect or violence in their homes.

Avalos helps teenage residents form their post-Mercy Home life goals 鈥 putting them on the path to college, trade school, job training or military service.

鈥淢y hope is to make sure kids understand the different pathways they have in life,鈥 Avalos says.

An English major at 性视界, Avalos considered teaching before receiving what he describes as a 鈥渃alling鈥 to social service.

鈥淭he most fulfilling part of my job is when I check in with the youth every week and I ask them how their week is going,鈥 he shared. 鈥淚 make sure they have someone to talk to if it鈥檚 not going well.鈥

Avalos gets to know each of the youth to help them identify personal goals 鈥 even when motivation is a challenge.

鈥淪ometimes there鈥檚 the youth who don鈥檛 want to do anything, so I tell them, 鈥楾his is your path. This is what鈥檚 going to happen,鈥欌 Avalos said. 鈥淪ometimes they don鈥檛 see the light at the end of the tunnel, but they鈥檙e still kids and they are still growing. That鈥檚 the most important part.鈥
